Christmas Hanging Garden

What you’ll need:

  • A large piece of rectangular plastic or wire trellis (available from hardware) Abt. 60-70 W x 1m L

  • Elastic twine (silver or red) - this will allow for some bouncing of the balls if a breeze comes along

  • Various shapes and colours of Christmas Baubles (Keep them in the colour theme of your day), you can buy large packs of multi colours and sizes from your bargain shops.

  • Green plant foliage. I have used the cuttings from my maraya and camellia bushes which needed pruning. If you have a large pine tree, that would be perfect and add a beautiful perfume to the decoration.

  • You can add some battery operated led lights too. I used 3 sets of 40 LEDs available at bargain shops

  •

How to create:

  • Make a start on threading the elastic through the baubles – this can take some time. The more baubles the more spectacular the finished product will be. You can start this task weeks before you’re ready to hang the final product.

  • To speed this process up we put baubles at each end of the twine and made the lengths quite long so that we had enough to play with while looping it in a knot on the top side of the trellis.

  • When you are ready to hang start with trimming the wire to the size you want.

  • Measure on your ceiling and mark where to place your hooks.

  • Working on a table, place a couple of boxes to raise the wire up from the table while threading them through. Its best to secure the baubles first

  • It makes it much easier to lift and see how many more baubles you may require.

  • Then thread the greenery branches through the wire/trellis – do this in a radius around the outside first and then fill in the gaps in the middle.

  • You can keep checking the whole time as to how much decoration you want.

  • If you decide to use the LEDs now is the time to thread them through – Preferably have them switched on so you can see where the lights will best been seen.

  • Now the final step is to attach the wire/trellis to your hooks on the celing.

  •

Voila ! You’re done. This decoration is well worth the effort. If you have 2-3 people working together it’s a whole lot quicker and easier.

The plants will survive for about 2 - 3 weeks before they start to drop leaves.
